Myron B. Sol Lederman. I would love to hear from graduates of the program. Matthew Ahart. No comments:. Myron Allen. That eight-week program was my first contact with real mathematical ideas, as distinct from the computational skills that I was learning in my high-school classes.
The shock had a salubrious effect: I made mathematics my profession. I owe that choice to many teachers, but Dr. Ross and my counselor, Steve Rosenberg, were the first to open the door. Possibly, those restrictions will prevent students living outside the USA from joining the Ross Program. Ross Program in Asia. That math camp has been cancelled for The Ross Program is an intensive summer experience designed to encourage motivated pre-college students to explore mathematics.
During those weeks, students are immersed in a world of mathematical discovery. Arnold Ross founded this multi-level program at Notre Dame University in Its growth was then spurred by the launch of the Sputnik satellite and the subsequent surge of interest in science education. In the Program moved to Ohio Dominican University.
In and the Ross Program was entirely online, but in-person sessions will resume in Our central goal has always been to instruct bright young students in the art of mathematical thinking and to inspire them to discover for themselves that abstract ideas are valuable and important.
The basic class in Number Theory will be led by Prof. Daniel Shapiro, Director of the Ross Program. To truly concentrate on abstract ideas and stay focused on concepts, students are asked NOT to bring computers, laptops, electronic tablets, video players, gaming consoles, or other distractions. Every year, several students from outside the U. They are highly talented, eager to learn abstract mathematical ideas, and fluent in English. Some financial aid is available for excellent students, but we can rarely provide support for travel expenses.
Students at the Ross Mathematics Program are not registered as college students, and do not receive official credit from the University. However, there are serious concerns about travel restrictions and quarantines imposed to combat the pandemic. Those rules might prevent some students from attending the Program. We hope that many of those restrictions will be lifted by June. We expect about 60 first-year students at each site, supported by 15 junior counselors and 15 counselors.
Nearly all first-year students are 15 to 18 years old, and the average age is usually 16 or In rare cases we admit some exceptionally mature 14 year olds, as well as some students who have already graduated from high school. Ross participants come from all over the United States, and from several other countries.
Prominent summer math programs for high school students are listed on various sites A key feature of the Ross Program is that the students concentrate deeply on just one subject for the entire session. We are convinced that this level of focus and depth is far more valuable than short overviews of many different topics. Is admission automatic? Are scholarships available? Living Arrangements Where do the students live? What is the mailing address?
Is there a curfew? Are the students segregated from college students, and from other summer camps? What are the security arrangements in the dorm? Will the Ross counselors check that students eat good food, do laundry, clean their room, etc.? What do they eat? Where do they eat? How often do they eat? Packing List What do students need to bring?
How do most students handle money - cash, credit cards, ATMs? What expenses are not covered in the program fees? Is there shopping within easy access? Are laptop computers allowed? What about other electronic devices? Transportation What is the transportation around campus?
